Puerto Montt is the gateway to southern Chile — the point where the Pan-American Highway ends and the ferries, fishing boats, and gravel roads of Patagonia begin. Most travelers pass through on their way to Chiloe, the Carretera Austral, or Puerto Varas. The city itself is a working port — not pretty, but functional, with good seafood markets and useful transport connections.
Angelmo
The Angelmo market is the reason to stop in Puerto Montt. A sprawling waterfront market split between a craft section (woolens, wood carvings, Chiloe baskets) and a seafood section where small restaurants serve the freshest fish in the region. Curanto en olla, caldillo de congrio, and fried milcao are the specialties. Portions are enormous and prices are lower than Puerto Varas or Chiloe. Arrive hungry.
Transport Hub
Puerto Montt connects everything in the south:
- To Chiloe: Drive or bus to Pargua (1 hour), then ferry to Chacao (30 minutes). Buses run directly to Castro (4 hours total including ferry).
- To Carretera Austral: Drive south to Hornopiren, then ferry to Caleta Gonzalo. Or take the Navimag ferry directly to Chaiten (10 hours).
- To Puerto Natales: The Navimag ferry runs through the fjords — four days, three nights. A cargo ferry with passenger cabins, not a cruise. Book well ahead in summer.
- To Puerto Varas: 20 minutes north by bus or car.
- To Argentina (Bariloche): The Cruce Andino lake crossing via Lago Todos los Santos, or drive via Paso Cardenal Samore (5 hours).
Around Puerto Montt
Alerce Andino National Park: About 40 kilometers east of the city, protecting some of the last stands of alerce trees — the South American equivalent of California's redwoods, some over 3,000 years old. Trails loop through dense temperate rainforest to hidden lagoons. The Laguna Sargazo trail (3 hours round trip) is the most accessible.
Calbuco: A fishing town across the bay from Puerto Montt, famous for the 2015 eruption of Volcan Calbuco — one of the most photographed volcanic events in recent history. The volcano is visible from town and several viewpoints. Calbuco's waterfront fish market is quieter than Angelmo.
Practical Information
Getting there: Fly from Santiago to El Tepual Airport (PMC) — about 1.5 hours. The airport is 15 kilometers from the city center. Long-distance buses from Santiago take 12-14 hours overnight.
How long: Most travelers spend one night maximum — eat at Angelmo, catch a connection south. There is not enough in Puerto Montt itself to justify a longer stay when Puerto Varas is 20 minutes away with better atmosphere and accommodation.
Weather: Rain. Puerto Montt averages 1,800mm of rainfall per year — it rains on roughly 200 days. Bring waterproof layers regardless of season.
